Salimos para el aeropuerto el 13 de enero. Después de despidiendo la Mónica, juntamos, por suerte, con un compañero de la Maka cuando ella vivó en Iquique. Él es de Inglaterra y por algunos momentos, practicamos nuestro inglés. Un tío nos recibió en Iquique, después del vuelo de no más de 2 horas. Llegamos a la casa dónde el Alberto, mi padre chileno, estaba esperando. Entramos la casa y vimos que estaba con mucho desorganizado. Pero un momento luego, supimos por qué. La casa, ese día, había robada!! Qué loco! Todos los televisores, computadores, y un X-box, no estaban! Los guardias vinieron y también la policía. Al menos, ahora, no hay nada a robar, y por eso, nos quedamos allá. Estaba muy feliz porque la casa tenía algunas cosas pequeñas para ejercicios como en el gimnasio. We left for the airport the 13th of January. After saying goodbye to Monica, we met up, by luck, with an old classmate of Maka’s from when she lived in Iquique. He is from England and for some moments, we practiced our English. A family friend received us in Iquique, after the flight of no more tan 2 hours. We arrived to the house where Alberto, my Chilean dad, was waiting. We entered the house and saw that it was super disorganized. But a moment later, we knew why. The house, that day, had been robbed!! Crazy!! All the tvs, computers, and an X-box were missing! Security and police came. At least, now, there was nothing to rob, and for that, we stayed there. I was quite happy because the house had a mini gym.
Iquique:
La mayor parte de los días, salí a correr para 30 minutos, con una vista de la playa. No estuvimos muy cerca para bajar pero pudimos ver. Un día salí a correr, pero tenía que ir al baño, y pensé que estuve más cerca de la MiniMark, un supermercado, que la casa. Estuve equivocada. haha Ese día, corrí por más de una hora, ida y vuelta. Pero divertido =] Ahora, sé mejor jaja.Most days, I left to run for 30 minutes, with a view of the beach. We weren’t very close to go down to the beach, but we could see it. One day I left to run, but I had to go to the bathroom, and I though that I was closer to MiniMark, a supermarket, than the house. I was mistaken. Haha That day, I ran for more than one hour, there and back. But it was fun =] Now, I know better haha.
Comimos sushi dos veces, cerca de la playa, y me gusta sushi mucho. Ádemas, comí una comida nuevo para mí que se llama loco. Son redondos y la carne parece como langosta en que es dura.
Domingo, fui a la catedral de Iquique para misa a las 11:00. Fue diferente pero bueno y es un monumento histórico. Después, caminé por la playa y saqué fotos.We ate sushi two times, close to the beach, and I like sushi a lot. Also, I ate a new food for me called loco. They are round and the meat seems like lobster in that it is a little tougher.
Sunday, I went to the cathedral of Iquique for mass at 11:00. It was different but good and is a historical monument. After, I walked by the beach and took photos.
La playa en Iquique está llena de personas y medusas. Parece que muchos de las medusas son muertes porque no molestan (la mayor parte) las personas en el agua. Pero, lo mismo, qué miedo! No hay tiburones cerca de la playa. Iquique tiene lo mismo tiempo todo el año con temperaturas cerca de 25 centígrados. También está en el desierto que se llama, La Atacama. La Atacama es el desierto más seco del mundo! Siempre yo estaba olvidando que no hay cambios de estaciones y entonces todos las restaurantes y casas son con diseños para eso. The beach in Iquique is full of people and jellyfish. It seemed like most of the jellyfish are dead since they didn’t (mostly) bother people in the water. But, all the same, how scary! There aren’t sharks near the beach. Iquique has the same weather all year with temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit. Also, it is in the desert called The Atacama Desert. The Atacama is the driest desert in the world! I always was forgetting there isn’t a change in seasons and then all the restaurants and houses are designed a certain way for that reason.
El 22 de enero, fuimos a Humberstone, un lugar dónde entre el medio de siglo XIX y XX, vivían personas que trabajaron en una mina de salitre. Vivían allá hasta los alemanas inventaron una versión sintética del producto. Es muy interesante y tiene muchas cosas originales de la época desde cubiertos, una piscina, botellas y mucho más. Me sentí como estuve en el “Old West”. Después, fuimos a un santuario religioso dónde un hombre estaba enfermo y promesa el Señor si ayudó a él a ser mejor; él va a construir algo para él. Y mejoró. Siguiente, fuimos a Pica dónde ellos vivían por dos o tres años y hay baños de vapor que son famosos. Durante el paseo en el auto, pudimos ver muchos pequeñitos tornados…qué loco. Son tan pequeños que no hacen nada pero, igual, loco! February 22, we went to Humberstone, a place where between the mid 19th and 20th century, lived people that worked in a nitrate mine. They lived there until the Germans invented a synthetic version. It is very interesting and has many original artifacts of the age from silverware, a pool, bottles, and much more. I felt like I was in the “Old West”. After, we went to a religious sanctuary where a man was sick and promised the Lord if he helped him to get better; he would build something for him. And he got better and fulfilled his promise. Following that, we went to Pica where the family lived for 2 or 3 years and there are natural steam baths that are famous. During the drive, we could see many small twisters…how crazy! They are so small that they don’t do anything but, the same, crazy!
El 27 de enero, salimos la casa muy temprano para ir al centro de buses y tomar un bus a Calama. El tiempo de viaje fue 6 horas en un bus que se llama semicama. Tuvimos que parar para los aduanas que hacen seguros que no estamos trayendo cosa desde Iquique que no podemos. En Iquique, muchas cosas son vendido sin puestos y por eso, tienen que las cuidar que está saliendo de la ciudad. Todo pasó bien. Llegamos a Calama y estuvimos en el mal hasta Alberto podría venir a buscar para nosotros para ir a San Pedro.January 27th, we left the house really early to go to the bus station and take a bus to Calama. The total trip time was 6 hours and it was on a bus called a “semicama” or half bed. We had to stop for customs that make sure that we aren’t bringing items from Iquique that we can’t. In Iquique, many things are sold without taxes and for that, they have to be careful what is leaving the city. All passed well. We arrived in Calama where we waited in the mall for Alberto to pick us up to go to San Pedro.
Durante el paseo a San Pedro, había un arbolito que tenía un señal que decía dame agua. Estaba allá por mucho tiempo y paramos a dar agua. Pasamos por la Cordillera de Sal y llegamos a San Pedro dónde comimos la cena y encontramos el hotel. San Pedro es una ciudad para las turísticas y todos cierran a las 1 de la mañana. Entonces, personas pueden descansar sin problemas de ruido. El día siguiente, fuimos al museo de artefactos desde los indignos y también pasamos por la casa de Pedro Valdivia. Después de almuerzo, fuimos a la valle de la luna que es muy similar de los “Bad Lands” en EEUU pero La Valle de La Luna es todo un color. Muy lindo. Caminamos en un cueva donde usamos un celular para luz porque no trajimos una farol. También vimos la puesta del sol. El próximo día, vimos un pueblo debajo de la tierra que tiene más de 2.800 años! Volvimos a Iquique y salimos en la noche para venir a Santiago. Llegamos, el domingo, a las 3 de la mañana. Qué tarde, pues temprano jaja.During the trip to San Pedro, there was a little tree that had a sign that said give me water. It has been there for a long time and we stopped to give it water. We passed by the Mountains of Salt and arrived in San Pedro where we ate supper and found the hotel. San Pedro is a city for the tourists and everything closes at 1 in the morning. Then, people can rest without problems from noise. The following day, we went to a museum of artifacts from the indigenous tribes and we also passed by the house of Pedro Valdivia. After lunch, we went to the Valley of the Moon that is similar to the Bad Lands in the US but the Valley of the Moon was all one color. Very pretty. We walked in a cave where we used a cell for light because we didn’t bring a lantern. We also watched the sunset. The next day, we saw a community underneath the earth that had more than 2.800 years! We returned to Iquique and left that night to come to Santiago. We arrived, Sunday, at 3 in the morning. How late, well, early haha.
Domingo, hubo una misa en honor de Rotary en Maipu. Y después, comimos almuerzo. Tomé el micro y fue una experiencia buena. Hablé con mis consejeros y regresé a la casa en la tarde. Por los dos días pasados, los abuelos, del lado de la mama, estuvieron acá. Quiero a ellos mucho porque son tan cariñosos. Es una lata que tienen que regresar a su casa.Sunday, there was a mass in honor of Rotary in Maipu (city pronounced like My Poo hahaha). And after, we ate lunch. I took the micro aka bus system and it was a good experience. I spoke with my counselors and returned to the house in the afternoon. For the past two days, the grandparents, on the mom’s side, were here. I love them a lot because they are so caring and lovely. It is a shame that they have to return to their house.
Sin embargo, el mes de enero, vino al fin y llegué a la mitad de mi intercambio. Qué más a decir pero AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH jaja. 5 ½ meses pasados y 5 ½ meses a venir. Me extraño mis amigos y familia de los EEUU muchísimo pero también quiero mis amigos, familia y vida acá. Estoy disfrutando mi tiempo pero también no puedo esperar a ver todo en Julio! Si hay algo que aprendí acá es para ser mí mismo y nada menos. Y eso es importante. Encontré amigos y estoy cómodo con ellos porque puedo ser mí mismo con ellos =D. And thus, the month of January, came to an end and I arrived at the middle of my exchange year. What more to say but AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH haha. 5 ½ months down and 5 ½ months to come. I miss my family and friends from the US so much but also I love my friends, family, and life here. I am enjoying my time but also I can wait to see everyone in July! If there is something that I have learned here is to be myself and nothing less. And that is important. I found friends and I am comfortable with them because I can be myself with them =D
