Buena idea!
On Sunday, in the morning, I went to watch my first triathlon in Piedra Roja (Red Rock). It was interesting with lots of people. The competition was very long with 2 or 3 different distances and the first man finished in two hours. For the last part, running, cyclist with numbers of the first three places rode behind the competitors (who were in the lead). Good idea!

On Monday, we had a "quiz"in gym in volleyball. In the the forarm part, I did bad...like a 5 (out of 7 aka like a 68) haha ooops and very good with fingers (setting)...a 7 (out of 7 aka 100). You can't win it all! We also recieved our scores from the PSU for Lenguaje (SPanish for Spanish). My grade was a 346 that is the same as 4.6 (out of 7). It's not bad for Lenguaje that's in Spanish...=]

Delicioso!
I didn't go to school Tuesday because they took the SIMCE, a manditory exam for Juniors in Chile. Its like a spanish test (in the US). Another 4 day week. ='] And to make it better, I got a package from my US mom with Peeps, cake and brownie mix (free of gluten!), and articles from the newspaper in Kutztown with news of my school and classmates. How exciting! I made brownies and it is the first cake like dessert that I have eaten since I arrived. Delicious!

Wednesday was...different. After history and chem, the juniors were divided to accompany the other younger grades to give clues to find students of the senior class. Following, we had a water war. CRAZY =] The seniors had a "tunnel" that students, including me, went in... water, ketchup, and other things (that smelled really bad) were thrown at us. Outside the tunnel, there were water balloons and bottles of water that we used to soak everyone.

Today, the juniors were given ties that signify that now, we are the biggest students in the school and we have a responsibility that comes with the age during our last year. Additionally, in a parade with many emotions, we said goodby to the seniors. (This was their last week in the school, minus their tests) In the US, they say See ya, Bye and there is nobody that wants to stay. It's like, we are headed off...*they run through the door* haha But here it is like they are leaving more than just classmates (of all the grades) buy they are leaving the family. There was a lot of crying. I think that Chileans in everything that they do, are a family and have more appreciation of the bonds of friendship of an "extended" family. That is my best description, it is very difficult to describe.

Also, I love being able to see the mountians. After it rains, the air is clean and the mountains are super clear...so here are some photos of awesome mountains. I took them today, they are newly coated in snow =D

Check back in a day or two for a link to videos of Chilean dances during the cutural week.

One last quick thought...in English:
Remember the days when all I wanted was the newest racecar track or a set of walkie talkies. Now I'm asking to spend a year in another country (which I'm doing...yay!) ...how times change! I am so incredible fortunate to have this oppurtunity!

On Monday, October 11th, we didn't have school due to Colombus day and no school friday, October 15th as well for "Un día de Los Profesores". It was like an Inservice Day in the US. But, I like to think that the 15th was a day to ce;ebrate my two months in Chile! haha

The week was even shorter for me. On Tuesday of the past week, I got up at 7:30 am like normal. But my Chilean dad had left! Why? Actually it was 8:30 am because on Saturday we changed the clocks, 1 hour into the future! (For the spring, It took a little time to realize why in the future and not into the past) haha I went to school late that day. =]

October 13th, a Wednesday, was the miner's rescue! Some schools didn't have school that day to watch but then they went to school on Friday.

Additionally, that day, I had a philosofia quiz. Buy aparently, I did so bad that the profesor though I didn't know anything haha. The English teacher was very nice to say that it is more a problem of the language. Then, I took the quiz with the English teacher and she translated. It went much better. =]. Also, I had an easier comprehension quiz. It is already a challenge, which is good, but it is more for my level. The essays actually, are the easiest and better for me bevause I can take all the time that I need and I use more resourses like an Internet translator that has more words. (I have my dictionary, but occasionally there isn't a word.)

In a different class, a women from a university taught us and we had to read a paragraph (that she gave us) for the group. I read for my group to practice. But I did horrible haha. It was very difficult to read the hand written words but also, for them, I had an accent...all was bad haha Although, I did better in history when a read a thing.

This weekend, four of my classmates and I got together to work for this week cultural week in school. Origionally, I thought it was for English, but no. We drew fish and other sea animals for the story we were in. It was of a mermaid that saves her sea friends like me and this other girl (we were fish) from a fisherman. Then, the fisherman wants to marry the mermaid but she doesn't because he had tried to eat her friends. It's called "La Pincoya". My face was painted blue, red, and white, my arms too.

On Monday, I met the new teacher from Pennsylvania and we talked more today. He is here through a program of Catholic schools and went to Notre Dame for his education.
It was fun to talk with him.

Who knew that broccoli and eggs together could be good? haha

On Tuesday, I didn't go to school because I was reallyyy tired. It's a thing that comes in waves. But Wednesday morning (Oct. 20th) was much better =]

Hoy fue "Jean's Day".
Today was "Jean's Day." It is a day where if you want, you can come in street clothes but then you pay 500 pesos ($1 approximately) It is a great idea to raise money. Additionally, it was the lat day of the culture week and a group came to dance for us. The Easter Island Dance by the guys was muy favorite =P I am going to try and put a video with the partes together. But here are some photos.

Sometimes, when I am sitting at the table or randomly, ther is a smile on my face because I'm happy. Yes, there are bad days but in the end, I am happy that I am here. It's like, I am eating a dinner, prepared by the nana...for me, in another country! How incredible!

Like I said, I have been here for two months. And this is my evaluation. That the first two months are for the culture, next, will be more of learning vocab. I feel that I am much better with the vocabulary that I know (and also with the conjugations, especially of some irregular verbs.) But it is time to add more words to my vocabulary and eliminate my accent!

Viva, Chi- Chi- Chi- Le- Le- Le, los mineros de Chile!!!! Yay every one is up safely!!!! Super exciting!!!! =D

Volvemos a escuela y solamente tuvimos biología.

Well, I caught another cold this week. Thus, the week wasn't much fun but the weekend was 3 days and I feel much better.

One different day in the week was Wednesday. In the morning, the junior and senior class went to a College Fair. It was funny when we went to the seccion of English schools, and some person asked me if I wanted information to recieve information to learn English now but I responded in English that I'm good with English. Suprise! haha But, there we recieved noteboks, pens, and a little ball too! The best part haha. We returned to school and only had biology.

During Thursday, we had a earthquake drill. Everyone needed to go to a security zone. It was like a fire drill.

Having class out side is so nice. When the weather is good, many of the profesors permit us to study outside on the patio/lawn after directions. It's much better than a day in the classroom.

In the US, especially at our school, we take for granted that we have printers and copiers. Here it is not so easy and the better part of time for fotocopías you need to pay money.

Saturday and Sunday I ran 20 minutes and walked for 20, in total 4 km. (I am going to work to do better, running more and walking less). I felt better after. I had more energy during the day but was more tired at night.

One of my belt buckles:

My sweet new jacket:

Saturday, in the afternoon, Maka, a friend, and my Chilean mom and I went shopping! For the first time (that I can remember in my life), I took the metro. The Metro doors open and closs really fast! There isn't much time to enter and leave. We went to Patronato St. which has a lot of street stores. I bought sunglasses, 2 belts, a cool Chile jacket, and things to do like markers, paper, pencils, and rulers. Lots of fun!

Here, I think that I see more gentlement. In the metro, the guys give there seats for others, elderly, adults, or women (more for the elderly but also for a pretty face =P). It's nice. Everyone has a lot of respect for the elderly.

Voy a tomar sol =]

I always thought of a cinturón (belt) in the phrase, cinturón de seguridad (belt of security or seatbelt). Then when I found out that cinturón is belt, it was wierd for me. It is an easy connection but I didn't make it. It's difficult to explain but I think that I imagine el cinturón like a seatbelt and I forgot that it is a word in a frase.

Other word things. tomar sol = broncear = tan = to drink sun but its much nicer to say tomar sol, to drink sun. The phrase is prettier and here is more common. Just awesome. What are you going to do this weekend? I'm going to drink some sun. =]

Que rico!

How rich!

Despues, mi padre chileno me informó.

September 23, I felt my first tremble. It was a value of approximately 3.9 on the Ricter Scale. I was reading outside on a bench. I didn't know why the bench movied but I didn't think anything of it. After, my Chilean father informed me. The same day, I completed the process for my identity card. All of my fingerprints are in the system now. Also, the day was one of two of PSU tests, practice exams like SAT subject ests (but these are manditory for them). Lenguaje and history were horrible, haha. Math, the best for me, was before biology. Biology was difficult because many of the questions have one word that I don't know, and then I don't understand the question.

September 26th was my Chilean mom's birthday. Some parts of the family came for a party. On Tuesday, there was another tremble! We were in psycology. For them, it is an excuse to leave class and go outside, but the profesor didn't let them and continued with class. I was ready to leave in a moment haha.

Other things: I really like that we have recess. I am learning again how fun recess is! There are games, sleeping, reading, and conversations. I recieved a cell phone and now it is easier to communivate with my family if there is a change in the plans. My Chilean father works a lot in the north and travels there during some of the weeks.

Can you believe that it is the month of October already?! Two months of school and then summer vacation =P

This weekend, I went to a Rotary meeting with all the Inbounds. We visited Valapariso and Viña del Mar. Very pretty! Photos acá

The food was very good and the people, very fun. We slept in cabins with 4 other people. we looked like tourists in our red polos that we recieved. And it was a late night. The next day we visited the beaches and stores. The photos expain much better than me. (So look at them! haha) Additionally, we spoke with our conselors and the experiences in the orientation, school, family, and other things. A marvelous time!

If you have questions, leave me a comment or send an email and I can answer them using the blog for everyone in the weeks that come. Here are some that I recieved.

What do you call your parents? Most of the time, I call them by thier first names, but refer to them by my Chilean mom/dad.

Cómo se llaman los hermanos? Se llama Macarena, Constanza, y Alberto.
What are the names of your siblings? Thier names are Macarena, Constanza, and Alberto.

Dónde trabaja su madre chilena? Trabaja en un salón de uñas.
Where does your Chilean mom work? She works in a nail saloon.

Where does the nana live? Is she a family member (biologically)? She lives in the house during the week and during the weekend, in an apartement in Santiago. She is not a biological member of the family.

How do you feel? Do you miss you home? It is better most of the time. =] It is a thing sthat can be very good one second and bad the next, but I am good at this moment.

Juegas volibol todos los días? No, solamente lunes, martes, y miercoles.
Do you play volleyball every day? No, only monday, tuesday, and wednesday.

How is your spanish? It is better than before buy I need to learn more vocabulary and to work on the conjugations. Also, I have a gringo accent because I pronounce the words with a lot of definition, not chilean.

Do you think that your spanish, that you learned before coming, is serving you well?
Yes, because I can communicate what I need. Though conversationg is very different from class because it is a lot faster. People say that I am very good with spanish but they had a girl the past year that didn't understand anything when she came.

But never in my life have I felt that I know so much and so little at the same time.

The past week, I did a lot of nothing. Without school, there isn't much of a schedule and I slept a lot. On Tuesday, we went to say bye to my Chilean sister who left for the US. She is in Ohio now and is starting an incredible experience. After this, my Chilean mom was very nice to say to me that I am not taking the place of Connie by I am a different and new daughter. Many thanks, because the thought had entered my mind but this helped me. When we went to the airport, I had thought about going on the plane too but I remembered that that is easier but here is more fun and very important. I am very happy I am here and with challenges come awesome times. I can't wait to know two languages!

On Monday, I ate the fruit of a cactus. It was very good. It tastes like honey dew, with a texture of watermelon, with seeds of a cranberry. I am discovering that I like kiwis too. Here we eat a lot of sea food, the greater part is clams.

I learned a new game called, "Dudo". They play this game in Pirates of the Carribean 2. The question is, "How many of the dice have this face?" Each player starts with 5 die. The goal of the game is to be the last one with die. In a circle, each player gueses how many of a face of die there are. Change the face or the number. (There are more rules but I am not going to write them.) Qhen a person doubts that there are at least that number of die, they say "dudo" ("I doubt") and then they count how many die thier are. If there is not the minimum, the person that says how many there are, loses a die. If the person that says "dudo" is not right, they lose one dice. I like the game.

On Saturday, the family had a party for the family because it was the 18th of September, the independence of Chile (and the reason for no school during the week). This year is very special because it is the bicentenial, 200 years! Go Chile! I talked with many people and had a good time. I learned the basics of the Cueca, the national dance. I can't express how good the food is!!

The day after September 18th is a day for the military. THere is a parade of all the parts in fromt of the president. Very beautiful. We didn't go but we were watching the parade on the tv.

Tuve un sueño donde fui jugando tenís y yo grito, "Careful, there is a ball on the court."
I had a dream where I was playing tennis and I yelled, "Careful, there is a ball on the court." I realized that I yelled in english. Then, I put my hand over my mouth and thought, SPANISH, Hannah, SPANISH. In my dreams I am telling myself that I need to speak and spanish. haha

Sunday, my Chilean dad, Maka, and I went to the beach, Pichelimu, for the end of the vacations. Very very pretty, beautiful, everything! The sand is black, very different than the beaches in the US. The waves were very strong and the sea is a little bit more blue. It was chilly because it was only the first day of spring and very windy there. Before mid-day, nobody is on the beach because of the culture and how late they sleep. It is very calming and I like it a lot in the morning. We visited La Punta de Los LObos but we didn't see any seals, very pretty though. We returned to the house yesterday becuase there was a lot of trafic on Monday. (I didn't go to school Tuesday then =P)

The food here is rich. It doesn't have much sugar and isn't very sweet. Simply rich! For example, I don't like apple juice in the US but here, it's more natural and very very very good.
